10 Titles Awarded on the Last Day of Amateur Road Nationals

By: Katherine Santos  July 02, 2022

Day four of the 2022 USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championships saw ten groups take to the criterium course in Roanoke, Va. on Saturday. The day was hot and humid with late afternoon showers causing a delay in racing.

The first race of the day was the Junior Women ages 13-14. Riders competed for a total of 30-minutes. With an impressive sprint to the finish, Tessa Beebe (Boise, Idaho; BYRDS) won her third gold medal of the week.

In the Junior Women's 11-12 race, riders would stay together for most of the race with a sprint finish determining the winner. Capital Bicycle Racing Club rider, Lilliana O'Donnell (Delmar, N.Y.; Capital Bicycle Racing Club) would win big and snag gold at the line.

The Junior Women's 15-16 race would see Virginia's Blue Ridge Twenty24 Devo team sweep the podium with Dahlia Kissel (Erlanger, Ky.; Virginia's Blue Ridge Twenty24 Devo) taking the win.

The last women's race of the day would be the Junior 17-18-year-olds. Coming in first after a sprint with the group out of the final turn would be Elaine Bao (Madison, Ala.) who raced unattached against multiple large teams. When asked about the move that won her the race she said "Sagan did it in Richmond, so I knew I could do it in Roanoke."

Following the 17-18 Women's race would be the action-packed Junior Men's 11-12 race. Taking home gold after another sprint to the finish would be Sean Davies (Los Altos, Calif.; SJBC).

Yesterday's road race winner, Enzo Hincapie (Greenville, S.C.; Onto Racing p/b Hincapie), would win the Junior Men's 13-14 criterium with Arjuno Burgos (Los Angeles, Calif.; BOOST Cyclesport) coming in second.

The Junior Men's 15-16 race had several game-changing moves that influenced the finish of the race including a crash in the corner right before the final straight. Peyton Burckel (Lacombe, L.A.; Onto p/b Hincapie) of ONTO p/b Hincapie would outride the field and take home the stars and stripes jersey.

Later in the afternoon, the 17-18 Junior Men took to the course. They saw a very active race with Hot Tubes Devo rider Artem Shmidt (Cumming, Ga.; HotTubes Development Cycling) escaping the field in an attempt to stay away until he was pulled back. His teammate AJ August (Pittsford, N.Y.; HotTubes Development Cycling) would instead escape the pack and win the race.

After an afternoon storm that caused a delay in racing. USA Cycling officials determined that both the U23 Men and the Cat 1 Men would race for one hour instead of the previously scheduled 75-minutes.

The U23 Men would start their race at 6:50 pm. Full throttle from the start of the race, riders would do everything they could to string out the pack. Yet another race coming down to a sprint, Liam Flanagan (Black Mountain, N.C.; Kelly Benefits Strategies) would fly to the finish and win the stars and stripes jersey,

The last race of the day would be the Men's Cat 1 race. After multiple attacks from several teams including Texas Roadhouse Cycling and Project Echelon, the last race of the evening would also come down to a sprint finish. Taking home gold would be Michael Hernandez (Leesburg, Fla.; Best Buddies Racing) after an excellent final push to the finish.
