Carson, Calif. – As the 2019 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships passed the midway point on Friday, August 30, 2019, two more World Records and 17 more titles were awarded at the VELO Sports Center in Carson, Calif. Among the day’s winners, Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Sisterhood of Cycling), racing in the 80-84 group, claimed her second gold of the week with another World Record time, and Camie Kornely (Fort Lee, N.J./Blue Ribbon) collected her third Stars and Stripes jersey of the championships.
During the morning’s races, Daniel Casper (Lauderdale, Minn./Donkey Label) successfully defended his title in the Men’s 50-54 Pursuit to take home another Stars and Stripes jersey (2:19.162), finishing just off his World Record time from 2017.
Martin Harris (Berkeley, Calif./Performance Cycle Coaching) took gold in the Men’s 55-59 Time Trial (36.004), and in the Men’s 60-64 group, Aron Seiken (Santa Fe, N.M.) captured the Stars and Stripes jersey (35.166) – his second of the week.
Kira Maximovich (San Jose, Calif/Performance Cycle Coaching) also set a new World Record en route to her win the Women’s 50-54 Time Trial, finishing with a time of 37.284.
In the Women’s Pursuit races, Beverly Chaney (Carmel, Calif./SJBC) won the 55-59 group (2:48.958), Ruth Clemence (Newport Beach, Calif./R5 Ciclismo) captured the 60-64 gold (2:44.533), and Mary Ellen Allen (La Jolla, Calif./Sisterhood of Cycling) won gold in the 65-69 group (2:52.970).
Baker won her second gold medal of the championships and set another World Record with her time of 4:09.024 in the Women’s 80-84 Pursuit.
The second half of Friday’s racing opened with three Stars and Stripes jerseys awarded in
Men’s Scratch. Jason Meidhof (Los Angeles/Team Beyer Auto) topped the podium in the Men’s 45-49 Scratch Race and Michael Howard (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won for Men’s 75-79 Scratch. Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif./Performance Cycle Coaching) won the Men’s 70-74 age group, and Jim Turner (Menlo Park, Calif/Sunpower Racing) won the Men’s 80-84 Scratch Race – both riders collecting their second gold medals of the week.
One additional Women’s Scratch Races were decided on Friday. Kornely attacked for her third title of the week, finishing first in the Women’s 45-49 Scratch.
Andrew Baker (Seattle/Broadmark Capital) won the Men’s 35-39 Points Race, with Jeromy Cottell (Redwood City, Calif./Touchstone Racing) claiming the gold medal in the 40-44 Points Race.
“I was running on pure adrenaline for the last 20 laps,” said Baker, who crashed midway through the race, but bounced back for the win. “I hung on for dear life and then kicked it.”
In Men’s Sprint racing, Robert Pelegrin (Torrance, Calif.) claimed the jersey in the 65-69 group. For Women’s Sprint Lisa Kiratsous (San Jose, Calif./SJBC) won the 40-44 group by a narrow .004 seconds.
Two days remain on the schedule as the championships run through Sunday, September 1. Racing continues with both morning and evening sessions on Saturday, August 31.
