ROANOKE, Va. – The 2022 USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championships kicked off in Troutville, Va. with the Individual Time Trial. Riders aged 11 years and up took the out and back course in a race to beat the clock. For racers, 11-14 years old, a 10-kilometer out and back course was the challenge of the day. A 20-kilometer course built on the 10-kilometer course for the younger age group was used by the 15–18-year-old racers. The U23 Men would race on a 32-kilometer course and the Amateur Men would take to a 28-kilometer course.
The morning started with a dominating performance by Patrick Welch (Northfield, Minn.; Kelly Benefits Strategies), who would finish in a time of 37:51.57. Welch had a strong race against the other U23 Men and would finish 12-seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. For the Amateurs Men's race, last year's winner Zach Gregg (Roanoke, Va.; Project Echelon Racing) would reclaim gold after finishing in a time of 34:51.86.
Later in the morning, we had the Junior Men and Women ages 17-18 and 15-16 take to the course. Winning the gold medal from the Junior Women’s 17-18 race was cyclocross champion, Katherine Sarkisov (North Potomac, Md.; Lux CTS p/b Specialized). When asked about her performance, Sarkisov said, “I feel great, I feel like it hasn't really settled in yet. It's nice this season has actually been paying off”. The Junior Men’s 17-18 winner was Alex Gustin (San Diego; Lux-CTS p/b Specialized). The Junior Women’s 15-16 race was won by Lidia Cusack (Chevy Chase, Md.; dcDevo Racing Academy), she would finish in a time of 31:40.94. The Junior Men’s 15-16 winner would be David Thompson (Hot Tubes Development Cycling). Thompson would have an impressive performance beating second place by 33-seconds.
The temperature began to rise in the afternoon with the Junior Men and Women 11-12 and 13-14 taking to the course. In the Junior Women’s 13-14 race, Tessa Beebe (Boise, Idaho.; BYRDS Cycling) would go two for two after winning the 11-12 race in 2021. Rowan Child (New Canaan, Conn.; HotTubes Development) finished in a time of 00:13:45.02 and reigned victorious in the Junior Men’s 13-14 race. In the Junior Men’s 11-12 race, the top step was won by Sean Davies (Los Altos, Calif.; SJBC). Davies finished his race in a time of 00:16:20.21. Lastly, in the Junior Women’s 11-12 race, Lilliana O'Donnell (Delmar, N.Y.; Capital Bicycle Racing Club) would take home the gold medal. She finished in a time of 00:16:33.71.
