TREXLERTOWN, PENN. JULY 14, 2018 — On the penultimate day of the 2018 USA Cycling Juniors and Masters Track National Championships, there were eighteen national titles awarded as the individual events came to a conclusion.
Individual Pursuit
Charlene Yarnall (San Clemente, Calif./Veloce Santiago) took home her first title of the event, winning the women’s 50-54 two-kilometer individual pursuit in a time of 2:40.948. Thursday’s men’s 60-64 points race champion, Larry Nolan (Freemont, Calif./CAL-NAT’S Racing) reproduced his efforts, winning the IP title in that same age group. Chris Carlson (McKinney, Texas/Matrix Cycling Club) made a clean sweep of all the endurance events in the men’s 55-59 age group after throwing down a 2:23.296 in his individual pursuit.
Time Trial
Sarah Fader (Boulder, Colo./ Hammer Racing Team p/b Thorne) proved herself the fastest lady in the 35-39 age group today, winning her 500-meter time trial by almost 1.5 seconds. Likewise, Ethan Boyes (San Francisco/JAKROO) took home the gold in the men’s 40-44 one-kilometer time trial by over three seconds.
Points Race
Christine D’Ercole (New York) and Catherine Moore (Denton, Texas/Matrix Cycling Club) made for some nail-biting action in the women’s 45-49 points race, each with fifteen-points going into the final sprint. D’Ercole was able to out sprint the field and took home the stars-and-stripes jersey. Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif./Performance Cycle Coaching) reached the top step of the men’s 70-74 points race podium. In the men’s 75-79, Rob Lea (Taneytown, Md./Sports T.E.A.M.) was the winner. David Ellefson (Banner Elk, N.C./360 Racing) took home his third title of this championship in the men’s 80-84 points race. In the men’s 45-49 event, winner Paul Martin (North Royalton, Ohio/First Internet Bank Cycling) took two intermediate sprints earlier in the race and then never let up. By the end of the race Martin had won or placed in six of the ten sprints, and was able to take a lap on the field, gaining him twenty-points.
Scratch Race
Olympian Patrick Gellineau (Brooklyn, N.Y./Somerset Wheelmen) beat out a stacked field in the men’s 65-69 scratch race. In the men’s 35-39 scratch race, Lucas Koehler (Bronx, N.Y./Pink Rhino Racing) pulled out the win, claiming the gold in that race.
Sprints
MaryBeth Pierantoni (Lincoln, Calif./BIG Picture Cycling) claimed her first ever stars-and-stripes jersey, winning the women’s 55-59 sprint tournament. Karen Purtill (Narragansett, R.I./Swamp Yankee Road Club) took home gold in the women’s 60-64 division. Lan Tran (San Diego/San Diego Cycling Club) reached the top step of the podium in the women’s 65-69 group. For the women’s 70-74, Jo Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Riptide - Cawes Cycling) claimed another title this week, winning the group. And our oldest female athlete of the event, Barbara Giquel (Salinas, Calif./JAKROO) claimed her third title of the week, winning the women’s 75-79 sprints. On the men’s side, Koh Annoura (Houston/Northwest Cycling Club) provided a major upset in the men’s 50-54 sprints, beating out some perennial favorites for the gold medal.
