Day three of the 2021 USA Cycling Junior, Elite, and Para-cycling Track National Championships tested riders. Temperatures were near 90-degrees as riders pressed on throughout the day to compete in several Sprint and Endurance events. The evening cooled off as storms rolled through during the Elite Omnium events.
The morning started with the Men's 15-18 Kilo Time Trial. Jonah Killy (Silver Springs, Md.; Kelly Benefits Strategies Elite-Devo) had a successful morning after kicking his day off with the win. Killy races for Kelly Benefits Strategies, a team that has been dominating races across the country this year. He finished in a time of 1:10.060.
Edge Cycling took control of the podium in the Women's 15-18 500-meter Time Trial. Annika Flanigan (Bethlehem, Pa.; Edge Cycling) took gold, and Anja Thomas (Mertztown, Pa.; Edge Cycling) took silver. "I didn't think I'd be here, this is my first year racing nationals," said Flanigan.
Flanigan finished in a time of 38.463-seconds.
The Men's and Women's 15-18 Pursuits were impressive to watch. Kelly Dahlin (Bellevue, Wash.; Jerry Baker Juniors) took the win on the Women's side after an incredibly fast second half of racing. The stands were packed full of Dahlin fans. In fact, when Dahlin rode by all you could hear were her friends and teammates cheering her on.
"Kelly is strategically gifted even in the midst of a race, it’s been really cool to see her calculate during a race." said teammate Carsten Pfundt.
On the Men's side, Antonio Rossi (San Diego, Calif.; Icademy) had a strong performance. "My first few laps were a little quicker than anticipated," said Rossi when asked for a breakdown of the race. He'll be a rider to watch on Tuesday when it's time for the Points race.
Due to impending storms, the evening session was postponed. Tomorrow riders will pick up where they left off.
