Another 10 National Champions Saturday at the 2019 USA Cycling Masters Road Championships in the Road Race which was contested at the U.S. Air Force Academy campus. Riders contested multiple laps of the 18.3-kilometer course, which included sections of the 1986 World Championship Course.
Jonathan Baker (Nevada City, Calif.), won the 45-49 category, marking his first National Title on the road, the others being in Cyclocross and Hill Climb said, “The race was hard to read, the pack stayed together. There were a couple attacks on the first couple laps and then two got away and it seemed like the pack was just content to ride together. I was hoping it was just going to be a really hard, selective race and I was just going to have to try to stay at the front but it didn’t work out that way, and I found myself a minute and a half behind with two laps to go and I said to myself ‘I’ve gotta go now.’ The penultimate time up the hill I attacked away from the field and bridged up to the leaders and we worked together on the last lap and then I attacked again up the hill and came in solo, which is what I wanted.”
Racing concludes Sunday where the Criterium will be contested at Banning Lewis Ranch.
